Five years later my dream is about to come true. I never let go of my unflinching desire to become a parent. After three miscarriages and many tears over spilled breast milk, I found a surrogate to help. My name is Karolina Garrett; this Web site tells the story of our family’s origin and promise. Scheduled for November 21, 2008 is a caesarean to deliver my sons—Noah and Kai. As a frumpy English teacher, a touch plump and fashion challenged, this moment in my life has me slightly spinning. Sprinkle in a few more adjectives—single, lesbian, condo owner, Volvo driving—and the picture becomes a blend of ordinary and verklempt. Welcome to our family tale. These are anecdotes inspired by the photograph I took strolling through the South of Market (SOMA) neighborhood surrounding us in our San Francisco locale.
